Birmingham, Alabama Architecture
Birmingham became home to many outstanding architects and builders during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This has continued to this day. The city saw tremendous growth beginning in the late 1800s due to its rich supply of natural resources, such as iron, iron ore, and coal. In 1873, James Powell of the Elyton Land Company is credited with referring to Birmingham as “The Magic City” as a result of that growth. Below is a small collection of houses in and around Birmingham, both old and new, built by some of these outstanding architects.
